Gmail is one of the first free e-mail providers to do things differently: huge storage, innovative labeling system and no delete button. Now Google has made many concessions in the face of increasing competition and public outcry. Yahoo now offers unlimited storage, Hotmail has more storage than Gmail and offers integration with Outlook, AOL Mail offers unlimited storage with IMAP access.
Gmail has always supported POP access but it has been less than ideal. Now Google is finally admitting defeat and rolling out IMAP access, which means all the e-mail clients out there (including the iPhone) can finally benefit from Gmail without having to go through Google’s idea of POP - which really sucked.
Login to your Gmail account and go to Settings to enable IMAP Access. Some may not have the option enabled yet so make sure to check regularly!
