2008 Summer Movies (Part 3)

Cinema Add comments

Preview of the biggest summer movies continues with our coverage of The Love Guru, WALL-E, Wanted, Hancock and Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

The Love Guru (June 20)

Has it already been 5 years since Mike Myers’ last live action film? He returns as The Love Guru, determined to break into the world of self-help. His biggest case is to reunite a popular hockey player with his wife who has left him for Jacques Grande (played by Justin Timberlake).

It is painful to think Mike Myers’ as an Indian-sounding guru, but it is even more awkward to imagine Justin Timberlake as a Quebecker hockey player. It has all the trappings of a trainwreck, and it is wiser to catch the flick for its disastrous effects on DVD.

WALL-E (June 27)

If this movie doesn’t win the Academy Awards for best animated feature, then I’m not sure what will. Pixar works its magic again and asks the question, what if mankind left and forgot to turn off the last remaining robot? WALL-E spends every day cleaning the Earth when, one day, EVE arrives from outer space to explore Earth’s vegetation. When it’s time for her to leave, WALL-E follows her on an intergalactic travel to get back the girl of his dreams.

Wanted (June 27)

Another comic book turned feature film is Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie as a super assassin. Main character played by James McAvoy learns his heart beats 400 times a minute, allowing him to precisely control any weapon he holds.

For over the top action featuring Angelina Jolie as assassin (it seems like she was born to play that role in as many movies as possible) and stylized visuals, don’t miss Wanted.

Hancock (July 2)

Will Smith returns to the big screen after playing the last man on Earth: this time as a superhero. Hancock isn’t a traditional superhero such as Iron Man, or even the Hulk. Hancock is a superhero in crisis and needs to go on a public relations campaign spearheaded by Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron. Unlike his last movie, this will finally give Will Smith a chance at comedy, an environment where he thrives.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (July 16)

The sequel, directed by Guillermo del Toro, reunites most of the original cast including Ron Perlman and Selma Blair. Del Toro’s incredibly active imagination and visualization are at work here, promising extremely stylish visuals and compositions, a-la-Pan’s Labyrinth.
