2008 Summer Movies (Part 4)

Cinema Add comments

Preview of the biggest summer movies concludes with our coverage of Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Dark Knight, Mamma Mia!, The X-Files: I Want to Believe and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Journey to the Center of the Earth (July 11)

Brendan Fraser’s first movie of the season is an adaptation of Jules Verne novel, exclusively released for 3D Real-D Cinema format. The story isn’t new and neither are the characters: if you happen to live in a city where this will be shown, go see it for the effects.

Verdict: go see it

The Dark Knight (July 18)

Sequel to the movie Batman Begins, The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale as Batman as he battles Joker. Actor Heath Ledger’s death means this will be his final full performance, but the movie should do well despite the tragedy. We can only hope that WB will green-light the third entry in the proposed trilogy so that we can see how Harvey Dent becomes Two-Face (as rumored).

Mamma Mia! (July 18)

Musical for the season is Mamma Mia! which was based on popular Abba songs. Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan star in this light and fluffy musical about a girl who wants to find out her real father before her wedding. If you haven’t seen the musical, you should take the time for the cinematic version, as long as it is faithful to the musical production.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (July 25)

I am still puzzled somebody decided another X-Files movie is what the summer crowd wants, especially since the TV series ended a few years back. The movie promises to be a standalone story, without getting too involved in the complex and convoluted alien conspiracy story of the TV series. Reunited Mulder and Scully should provide some meaningful on-camera spark.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Empire (August 1)

The Mummy franchise goes to Asia and finds Jet Li, the resurrected Han Emperor. Change of scenery should be good for the series if the rumored 3 (yes, 3 more) sequels are ever to come to fruition.

Verdict: wait and see another movie
