Review: The Love Guru (2008, comedy)

In: Movie Review

6 Oct 2008

Mike Myers’ latest movie The Love Guru is an improbable comedy on many fronts. First of all, Toronto Maple Leafs in the running for the Stanley Cup is virtually unheard of, Mike Myers character of Guru Pitka is unconvincing and Justin Timberlake as a French Quebecker is just insulting.

The story follows a Maple Leaf player who suddenly loses the ability to play when he is dumped by his wife who now lives with his rival Jacques “Le Coq” Grande. Yes, that’s his name and he isn’t named after a chicken. The Leafs’ owner played by Jessica Alba taps the Love Guru to reunite her star player with his estranged wife just in time to win the Stanley Cup. Guru Pitka wants to use this opportunity to finally become world’s best self-help spiritual helper and get bigger than Deepak Chopra, even if it means he has to resort to unconventional methods and shortcuts.

To get to the end of the movie, you must endure an hour of homophobic jokes, childish humor and some bad acting by Justin Timberlake as he tries to be authentic (and no, PopTart with ketchup isn’t the Quebec pizza…). It is disappointing that the end result is so shallow and unfunny since there are many stars tapped for this movie. Ben Kingsley must owe someone a big favor to appear in a low-brow comedy like this. Maybe he needs to hire a guru who could help him find his career back.

In the end, it’s too bad that Mike Myers’ latest character is a big letdown as the movie doesn’t contain enough humor to save itself. One good thing is that the movie is pretty short, clocking in at just 80 minutes.
