Review: Ape Academy (PSP)

Continuing my quickie reviews of games on PSP, I tried Ape Academy which is a collection of minigames: they aren’t quickfire like Nintendo’s Warioware but most of those games are simple to control usually requiring you to use just a few buttons. Since it’s an academy, there are 6 levels (3 years in Junior grade and 3 years in Senior grade): each grade is represented by a tictactoe board where each square represents a minigame. Your goal in order to graduate is to create lines by winning minigames. This adds a layer of unnecessary complexity that I’m sure was designed to lengthen the game.

Ape Academy

Minigames themselves are very diverse: there are couple of trivia questions, mental calculations, dodgeball, juggling, shooting, air hockey, bowling… if you can imagine it, there’s a big chance it’ll be in this game. In fact there are about 40 minigames. The problem with the game is, once you try the games, there are almost no other reason to keep playing. So in the end, this is a very simple collection of minigames that’s fun when you first discover the game, and then becomes uninteresting.
